Structured vs Unstructured Hats: Which Is Better for Your Embroidered Logo?

Benjamin B. |

When you're picking a cap to put your logo on, one choice matters more than people realize: structured or unstructured. It comes down to whether the front of the hat is stiffened or soft, and it changes the fit, the look, and how your embroidered logo actually sits.

What's the difference?

A structured hat has a stiffener (usually buckram or foam) built into the front panels, so the crown stands tall and holds its shape even when the hat is off your head. An unstructured hat skips that stiffener, so the front is soft and the crown slouches down and follows the shape of your head. Same fabric, same logo, very different feel.

How it changes your embroidery

This is the part that matters most for a custom logo. A structured front gives the needle a firm, flat surface to stitch into, so detailed logos and lettering come out crisp and stay crisp. It's also the only kind of front that can hold 3D puff embroidery. On an unstructured hat, the soft front moves and bunches a little, so embroidery reads softer and you'll usually want to keep the design simpler. Neither one is wrong. It depends on the look you're after.

Which should you choose?

  • Go structured for a bold, professional look, detailed logos, puff embroidery, and group orders where you want every hat to look sharp. Most trucker caps, including the Richardson 112, are structured.
  • Go unstructured for a relaxed, lived-in look. This is dad hat territory, popular with clothing brands and casual merch.
Structured Unstructured

FAQ

Is the Richardson 112 structured?
Yes. The 112 has a structured, mid-profile front, which is a big reason it takes a logo so cleanly and is the most popular custom cap in America.

Can you embroider an unstructured hat?
Absolutely. It just gives a softer result, and very detailed or puffed logos do better on a structured front.
