Hat size converter

Last updated: August 2026. By Ben B., founder of Embroidery Inc, Woodland CA.

Measure around the widest part of your head, about an inch above your ears, keeping the tape snug but not tight. Type the number below in inches or centimeters, and this converter gives you your fitted hat size, your letter size, and whether a one-size snapback fits you. It uses the same size chart we publish in our hat measuring guide.

The chart behind the converter

Head (inches) Head (cm) Fitted size S to XL
21 1/4 54 6 3/4 S
21 5/8 55 6 7/8 S/M
22 56 7 M
22 3/8 57 7 1/8 M/L
22 3/4 58 7 1/4 L
23 1/8 59 7 3/8 L/XL
23 1/2 60 7 1/2 XL
23 7/8 61 7 5/8 XL

How to take the measurement, plus advice for ordering mixed-size groups, lives in the full measuring guide. Choosing between snapback, flex and fitted closures? That is this comparison.

Common questions

What is the average hat size?

Around 7 1/4 to 7 3/8 for adult men and 7 to 7 1/8 for women, which is why one-size snapbacks fit most people.

What if I am between sizes?

Size up. A slightly roomy fitted cap wears better than a tight one, and flex or adjustable closures absorb the difference entirely.

Do I need sizes for a group hat order?

Not with one-size snapbacks like the Richardson 112: they cover roughly 6 7/8 to 7 5/8, plus Youth and XL versions at the edges. Flex caps need rough sizes (mostly L/XL for men's crews); true fitted caps need everyone's exact number.

How do I measure without a tape measure?

Wrap a piece of string around your head an inch above the ears, mark the overlap, and measure the string with a ruler.

Size sorted? Pick your hat and put a logo on it. No minimums, sewn proof in 24 to 48 hours, embroidery included in the price.
