Search for custom trucker hats and you will see two different looks on the same Richardson 112: a laser-engraved leather (or leatherette) patch stitched to the front, or a logo embroidered directly into the fabric. People type both into the same searches, and plenty of our own visitors arrive looking for patches. Here is the honest comparison so you pick the right one the first time.
What each one actually is
A leather patch hat starts with a piece of leather or synthetic leatherette, laser-engraved or debossed with your logo, then attached to the hat front, usually sewn around the border, sometimes heat-pressed. The logo lives on the patch, not in the fabric.
An embroidered hat has the logo stitched directly into the front panel in polyester thread. The design is physically part of the cap. That is what we do at Embroidery Inc, with your logo sewn on a real test hat for approval before the order runs.

Choose a leather patch if
- Your brand IS the rustic look: ranches, breweries, woodworking, outdoor and heritage brands wear it naturally.
- Your logo has very fine line detail that thread would need to simplify.
- Uniform monochrome across every hat matters more to you than color.
That is a real aesthetic and some companies have built entire brands on it. We simply do not make them.
Choose embroidery if
- Your logo uses color. Thread reproduces it; a patch cannot.
- The hats are working gear. Direct stitching has no edge to lift and nothing to peel, which matters on hats that live outdoors.
- You want texture and dimension, especially 3D puff on bold marks.

The middle path people forget
Embroidery can borrow the patch aesthetic: a bold, single-color logo stitched in a tight rectangle or oval border reads patch-like from a distance while keeping thread durability and patch-free pricing. The stitching itself wins long-term because it is part of the fabric with no attachment to fail. A well-sewn patch lasts years too; heat-pressed patch edges are the common failure point.
